The Influence of Physical Health on Suicidal Ideation in Older Adults

Abstract
The purposes of the study were to explore the influence of physical health on suicidal ideation in older adults above and beyond sociodemographic and depressive variables and to test the interaction effect between physical health and depression on suicidal ideation. Subjects in the study were 302 community residents in Daegu who were over 61 years old. The findings showed that suicidal ideation in older adults was high that the average score was 17.88¡¾13.82 (possible range 0-38). Physical health was a significant predictor of suicidal ideation, controlling for demographic variables (gender, age, having spouses, and economic status) and depression, but the interaction effect between physical health and depression had much higher impacts on suicide ideation. The most powerful predictor of suicide ideation was depression. The other significant predictors of higher suicide ideation were male, younger individuals, and having no spouse. Results suggest that health care providers need to assess whether older adults with physical illnesses have been placed with the subsequent development of depression, and if needed, make referral for mental health centers and provide some programs for suicide prevention.
